in video mode, the menu changes to that of the Cinema EOS range, with features such as shutter angle and gain. Canon’s multi-interface hotshoe now also features, fitting accessories like wireless mics or an XLR audio interface. This not only communicates with the device wirelessly, but can also be powered from the camera battery. The new body has a tally lamp front and back, which can be set to flash when the battery is getting low or the memory card fills up. There’s a port for timecode, but the HDMI remains the micro version. Canon has removed the in- body image stabilisation system, believing filmmakers will either use a tripod or gimbal. There is digital IS built-in and many RF-mount lenses have it, too. With a new processor and dual- gain system with base ISO settings of 800 and 3200 when using C-Log 3, it’s a leap forward in dynamic range and noise control over the R5. While that camera maxed out 8K Raw recorded internally at 30p, the R5 C now handles 8K/60p, but only when running from an external power source. Remaining from the EOS R5 is the Dual Pixel AF system Mark II, which tracks moving subjects very well and has excellent face and eye detection. Canon has managed to turn the EOS R5 C into a camera really aimed at professional moviemakers. canon.co.uk
of working. It is a fatter version of the R5, as it crams in a cooling fan and useful moviemaking features – like waveform monitoring and no limit on recording time, as well as file formats like 8K/60p Raw. With a full-frame sensor, it knocks spots off the EOS C70 for image quality. It can shoot in 8K or high-quality C4K settings that downsample 8K files for super-detailed 4K in up to 120p, for as long as your batteries and memory card last. The R5 would quickly overheat and shut down. The battery life of the 2100mAh LP-E6NH is not great, but you can plug in a USB-C power source. The fan itself is very quiet, and you can reduce its speed, but unfortunately can’t be turned off. A new on/off switch lets you select between photo and video mode, and all the buttons on the body have two different labels since their functions vary depending on the mode set. In photo mode, the camera boots up with the normal EOS mirrorless menu system. But

audio controls are behind the fold- out screen, but are easy to use and give sound quality and control far beyond any mirrorless. The EOS C70 uses the large Canon BP-A cinema batteries available in a huge range of sizes. It also comes with a bolt-on top handle that has screw threads for accessories, plus a coldshoe to accept a DSLR-type mic. Setting a new standard for Canon, the C70 has 120fps frame rates. However, there is no video Raw capture. Control of rolling shutter is good. Noise at high ISO settings is where the camera does start to fall behind the latest crop of cameras with full- frame sensors. The EOS C70 is an ideal step up to real cinema camera ergonomics and features for anyone who is frustrated with the limitations of mirrorless or DSLR cameras for shooting video.
