“Hail, my friend! Tell me, how was your year?” “Great!” (His flock was eaten by lions.) “How was yours?” “Great!” (His village was eaten by lions.) “Nice to see you again in person.” “Yes, it is so nice.” (Also his dog was eaten by lions.) “So very nice.” (His brother’s village too – lions.) At some point though, colleagues have to sit down and frankly discuss their lion problem.* BIG SUSTAINABILITY PUSH AT THIS YEAR’S CONFERENCE IBC2022’s conference sessions made their best push yet in focusing on sustainability. After years of laser focus on the development of tech, the effects of those advances and reducing negative externalities is now a regular part of the discourse. Discussions on sustainability have felt at times like shouting into the wind, with those most concerned not in a position to effect change. But these conversations are now including organisations with influence. ‘Building a sustainable future in tech’ was a conversation moderated by Saleha Williams of tech business consultancy Cognizant, including
presentations by Jackie Pynadath (director, sustainability and innovation, Google Cloud EMEA) as well as Katy Kasmai (senior programme manager and sustainability lead at Google TV). Pynadath gave an overview of Google’s environmental targets, including its goal of operating on 24/7 carbon-free energy and net- zero emissions across its value chain by 2030. Certain companies may throw around ‘net zero’ and ‘carbon neutral’ without knowing how to get there – or even what those terms actually mean. Pynadath clarified that Google’s ambitious goal is to have literally zero carbon emissions in its power generation. As a result, the company is ramping up R&D of green tech and investment in clean energy solutions, which include everything from solar, wind and nuclear to new carbon capture and sequestration experiments. Pynadath said that the company is about 66% of the way to being globally carbon-free. Google is also rolling out a way to measure the power consumption of its data centres in real time, and working to deliver five gigawatts of new carbon-free energy to manufacturers. “Our data centres are much more efficient with energy than normal enterprise data centres,” he explained.

SUSTAINABILITY IN NEWS AND SPORTS OPERATIONS
DISCUSSIONS ON SUSTAINABILITY HAVE FELT AT TIMES LIKE SHOUTING INTO THE WIND
“We’re setting that bar and trying to pull the industry along with us.” Google TV’s Katy Kasmai noted that applications like the metaverse might be highly power-intensive, which is why it’s essential to get to zero-carbon data centres. “It’s not easy,” Kasmai said. “But we don’t have a choice. Not just Google,
