RENOVATION SENSATION Gabi Riseley, owner and design director at Henry Rose Interiors, talks us through a total transformation from bedroom to bathroom

Cambridge Edition: Can you outline the brief for this particular project? Gabi Riseley: We have worked with this client several times before, so when they told us their house has only one bathroom and too many bedrooms – and asked if we could turn one of them into a large bathroom – our answer was yes! Older homes tend to feature bigger bedrooms and smaller bathrooms – as was the case here – and the client felt they were missing a bath. Our brief was to create a luxury oasis for long soaks in the tub with a TV they could watch while bathing, and to incorporate a freestanding bath with a separate shower with a seat and storage. CE: How did the transformation progress – did you encounter many challenges along the way? GR: First, we sat down with the client and approached the layout of the room, identifying where the current drainage and water was inside the house. Luckily, the room had an adjoining wall with their en suite, meaning there wasn’t too much upheaval with the plumbing! The WC needed to be along the back wall for this to work easily, so we worked from that as our starting point. We boxed out around the toilet frame and cistern, creating an illuminated recess above. The shower was installed next to the WC; we made a boxed area to act as a bench seat, with space for alcoves to be created up the side of the seat for storing shampoos and toiletries, etc. A 1.1x0.9m shower tray was used, but with the additional space for the bench seat, this feels more like a spacious 1.5x0.9m. We also had to stud out the wall for the TV, and rather than having the towel radiator projecting into the room, we created a recess for this to sit in. The bathroom removal phase was not required here, so the new pipework and plumbing took the time this would normally take. Our average time to complete a bathroom renovation is two weeks, which is exactly how long this project took. CE: Tell us about the materials and suppliers you chose to work with. GR: The new bathroom’s palette uses lavish streaks of gold and silver within the marble-effect tiles. In order to elevate this even further, we selected brushed stainless- steel brassware to add a luxurious metallic touch to the room. We like to stand by our

recommendations, so most products we use are ones we already have in our home. For the brassware and shower enclosure, we used Crosswater, while Clearwater was the obvious choice for the freestanding Clearstone bath. GR: The clients loved their new, spacious, luxurious bathroom and couldn’t wait to have a soak in the tub and watch TV! As a result of the renovation, their en suite now looked dated, so they have commissioned us to start on that too. CE: Were the clients pleased with the finished result?
