Broadcasting live with a connected camcorder is easier than ever – and your clients will demand it WORDS ADAM DUCKWORTH STREAMADELICA!

I t may not always feel like it, but there’s loads of business to be had by indie filmmakers – plenty of commercial clients want to get content out live on platforms like YouTube, Vimeo and Facebook Live. Livestreaming niche content is here to stay, with everything from sporting events and gigs to product launches and church services being broadcast and watched in real time – with ever-growing numbers. Sensible clients are searching for professional services rather than a social media intern waving an iPhone around. So if you already make corporate films and branded content for paying clients, it’s time to become their go-to expert in shooting and streaming events. Think multicamera set-ups and live switching, presenters with roving reporter mics, on-screen

graphics and reliable connections. It’s like being a live TV producer rather than a cinematographer, so there are new skills to learn and some extra kit to buy. This calls for a different sort of camera – one made for ENG and TV-style broadcast, with all the streaming protocols and connectivity built-in. Most of this can be bolted to anything, from mirrorless to cinema cameras, but those aren’t made for the job. Instead, all-in-one camcorders are the kings of streaming. These can link with a Wi-Fi network, use a 4G dongle or bonded cellular system, or plug in with a choice of wired connections. They will then connect to streaming services like YouTube Live or Facebook and stream at the push of a button. Or, they can upload to

cloud streaming services, link to a switcher for multicamera use or employ virtual switching systems such as Sony Virtual Production or Livestream. They can also record the footage to their own cards in high resolution for later use. Many have zoom lenses with a huge focal length range, large sensors for good low-light performance and quality internal codecs. So we’re taking a gander at the latest connected camcorders, getting hands-on with the brand- new Panasonic HC-X2 and looking at what else you need to go live – in professional quality.
