RED KOMODO-X
Opting for Raw shooting doubles the frame rates across key resolutions. At 6K full resolution, it now achieves 80fps, while 5K reaches 96fps, 4K hits 120fps and 2K reaches an impressive 240fps. Additionally, when working with 16-bit Raw files, users can select from four compression settings, finding the right balance between quality and file sizes. While processing Red Raw files used to be a faff, major NLEs now handle it seamlessly, either natively
“One of the biggest changes is significant improvement in high ISO settings and dynamic range”
or through simple plug-ins. This streamlined integration allows for optimal control over crucial aspects such as white-balance, ISO, highlights, shadows, highlight roll- off, sharpening and noise reduction. Faster workflows can be achieved with ProRes 4444 and 422, HQ and LT available in 4K at 120fps, along with ProRes 4444 XQ 4K at 60fps. The original CFast card slot has been replaced with a more typical and faster CFexpress capable of handling these formats. External recording in 4:2:2 10-bit via SDI/ BNC is also an option, supporting up to 4K at 60fps. Recording from the entire Super 35 sensor in 6K, the Komodo-X allows for subsequent cropping to 5K, 4K or 2K, altering angle of view and max frame rates. The sensor in the Komodo-X exhibits significant improvements in high ISO settings and offers a greater dynamic range compared to its predecessor. With an ISO range
from 250 to 12,800 and a base ISO of 800, Raw shooting essentially occurs at the base ISO 800, with the ISO adjusted in Raw conversion using metadata to then match the camera settings. The Komodo-X, deriving its colour science from the V-Raptor series, excels as a main camera – particularly in its exceptional treatment of skin tones. In contrast, the original Komodo, which has been optimised for vibrant, punchy images as a crash camera, lacked emphasis on skin and subtle tones. It supports custom LUTs, including the option to upload your own. The footage is now truly remarkable, with extensive grading possibilities. Indeed, the Komodo-X surpasses its predecessor in so many ways, delivering outstanding colour in a variety of high-quality codecs. Editing 6K files may strain your computer, but the trade-off is worthwhile for the exceptional
ALL GROWN UP The camera now has the same accessory mounts as the V-Raptor for the screen (below) and side handle (above)
