BLACKMAGIC CINEMA CAMERA 6K

observed in many of its newer models – all of which include non-Raw alternatives. This 6K camera stands as Blackmagic’s first full-frame device exclusively dedicated to Raw capture. It does lack an edit-ready workflow option, necessitating the transcoding of footage into a usable format. BRAW files seamlessly integrate with Blackmagic’s DaVinci Resolve. The camera also includes a free, full Studio version of Resolve, unlocking access to high-end formats and saving £255. For non-Resolve users, mastering its extensive features – including advanced Raw conversions – will involve a steep learning curve. Yet, proficiency in Raw processing within Resolve unleashes the Cinema Camera 6K’s full potential, delivering stunning, filmic footage with exceptional grading capabilities. Despite being officially named Blackmagic Design, the Aussie brand appears to have barely considered the camera’s enlarged form factor and style, resembling a Pocket Cinema Camera clone, albeit marginally smaller. It’s a massive camera and lacks a premium feel, exuding a somewhat plasticky build which doesn’t ooze class. The 6K Pro model’s built-in ND filters are also absent. Maybe there will be a new full-frame 6K Pro on the horizon that includes NDs, or perhaps they were too hard to squeeze in because of the large sensor? To use the new 6K cam, you’ll need a variable ND or standard ND filters in a matte box. Blackmagic has added an optical low-pass filter to combat moiré, but there are some rolling shutter issues as the camera doesn’t have a speedy stacked sensor design, for example. A little-known function in DaVinci Resolve can use camera

gives a bold, punchy look. Extended video boasts a wider dynamic range, while the film setting exudes a more filmic feel. Included LUTs normalise the monitor image while recording, with the flexibility to load custom LUTs as well. Blackmagic strategically places its BRAW as the dominant Raw format for this camera, a trend

FAN-TASTIC Several cooling ports around the camera help stop overheating, including at the side of the EVF mount on the top-plate

ACCESSORIES SUPERSIZE THE 6K BEAST The Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K has an unusual and large form factor that is easily mistaken for a medium format film stills camera or pro DSLR with an integrated handgrip. Although it is not designed for shooting stills, it can capture single-shot still images in Raw. In standard form, it is a big, bulky camera with lots of vents to help keep the sensor The optional external viewfinder has a 1280x960 colour OLED display with

built-in proximity sensor and four- element glass dioptre, with different eyecups included in the £499/$495 kit. The £161/$149 battery grip screws onto the bottom plate, which accepts two additional NP-F batteries for close to three hours of the in-camera battery and two in the grip. This makes the camera very front-heavy with anything but the smallest lenses, though, and is not ideal for use in rigs or gimbals.

cool when recording. The addition of an optional EVF and battery grip further exemplifies its size, making the camera simply massive.
