LIGHTING MASTERS OF HIGHLIGHTS AND SHADE

This award is not about who owns and uses the most kit, but rewards best use of lighting – be it natural, ambient, artificial or a mix of both. Creative use of light makes a massive difference to the look of any project and this award recognises control of mood that has really paid dividends. It could be careful use of light that hangs together through a whole film – which was the case with last year’s winner Ryan Smith’s first feature-length film Lottery , which is now streaming globally. The 24-year-old spent £7000 to shoot and produce the whole film, where his careful lighting choices made it stand out as a fantastic piece of work.

LIVESTREAMED EVENT THE ULTIMATE IN IMMEDIATE CREATIVE CONTENT

Correct lighting is the magic ingredient that turns your film project from average to exceptional. The resulting footage will keep audiences or clients coming back for more thanks to the high production values. For surprisingly affordable professional-level lighting, Godox is a great choice with its range of LEDs for all needs and budgets. The brand offers powerful COBs, fresnel lights and LED panels in sizes large and small. This includes a range of lighting modifiers such as large parabolic softboxes and beauty dishes as well as gels, diffusion, scrims, stands and everything else you could need. The company also offers hybrid lights: either powerful COBs or a large LED panel that flashes, suitable for stills and movies. With the most popular for filmmakers being the wide range of COB lights, these come with a standard Bowens mount.

Live video is where it’s at right now, with product launches, local and international events, houses of worship, sports broadcasts and lots more wanting to get content out as it happens. It’s exciting and immediate, as well as a booming market. We’d love to see a link to the whole broadcast, but a short highlights edit is good too. As long as it’s a straight edit of what was broadcast rather than with any extra production added. What we’re looking to see is exactly what the viewers saw.

AERIAL THE VIEW FROM ON HIGH

If the incredible high-angle views from drones, UAVs, pole cams, helicopters or planes are your speciality, this is the category for you. From normal drones to FPV, finding incredible shots that are impossible any other way, let’s see your best! The moment we saw Marcus Rangel’s film Prairie Burn in last year’s awards, it became obvious it was going to be tough to beat in the aerial category. It is a visually stunning piece of media. Although there are plenty of non-aerial shots within the film – and some evocative spoken-word poetry – it’s the airborne work that makes the film really stand out. Can you beat this for 2024?
