lessons, of course, ensuring that when it comes to public exams, students consistently do well (as the most recent A-level and GCSE results clearly demonstrate). But it’s also about cultivating children’s minds, imagination and potential, with everything from mind-expanding extracurricular programmes to growing links with future employers via mentoring, work experience and apprenticeships. Schools are also unafraid to tackle some of the biggest topics of our time, such as sustainability, striking a delicate balance so that young people recognise the challenges ahead but feel they have the agency, skills and confidence to take them on. At a time when so much about our world seems precarious, the vital role our area’s schools are playing is one thing that we can whole-heartedly celebrate.

Residents here are healthy, living longer than in many other areas of the country; wealthy, with annual earnings exceeding the national average; and wise, with around 80% achieving A-level standard and often better. Companies, understandably, are tapping into the abundance of talent here and the pace is accelerating, with increasing investment and enough massive firms jostling for space to create their own versions of Monopoly. No wonder people talk about the Cambridge Phenomenon. Our area’s schools have a vital role to play in continuing to develop that richness of talent and – given the results – it’s a challenge they are clearly relishing.
