SUSTAINABILITY

“There are challenges, but children matter, their voices deserve to be heard and they can make a genuine difference” every aspect of school life, starting with the curriculum. It’s a topic that can thread through different subjects. In science, children might study ecosystems and energy and then find creative ways to reduce waste and encourage re-use. They could spend an English lesson debating the pros and cons of fossil fuels, explore the impact of climate change on growing sugar beet locally in geography, or examine data about the changing rainfall patterns in maths. Many schools are also inviting families to get involved so that sustainability becomes an issue capable of involving the whole school community – parents, staff and children – and the environment is a top-of-mind preoccupation all-round. This doesn’t have to be over-complicated. Even the very youngest in a school – three- or four-year-olds – can understand the importance of clean water, handwashing and sanitation: all
