Empowering pupils to have a say and a stake in the future of our precious planet, sustainability is increasingly central to the school day O ur area’s schools don’t shy away from difficult topics. Instead, they infuse them with a strong underlying message of empowerment so that pupils of every age can start to learn how to lead, influence and innovate. Sustainability is a case in point. Taking positive steps right now could make a huge difference for the future. However, it is also a topic with a potentially upsetting narrative about the way the world is changing and the threats it is facing, so schools also have to think carefully about how to get the message across, particularly where young children are concerned, and balance crisis with confidence, reality with reassurance. They are stressing the point that, yes, there are huge challenges, but children matter, their voices deserve to be heard and they can make a genuine difference to how we navigate the issue at hand. Sustainability, which can encompass so many different areas, is a major focus for schools and there is a real commitment to ensuring that it permeates
