People are exploring if the immersive tech helps them consider another lens, or build a new world/ landscape, ensuring they can keep a scene in the script as it may not be possible logistically and operationally without it. Immersive tech may be able to influence our creative thinking before technology is involved. It could enable a pathway to shoot or create new content where some restrictions in the real world just wouldn’t be able to make it possible. It also extends the narrative by allowing immersive executions in exhibitions, mixed-reality environments or gaming, as well as future-proofing some of those digitalised assets for future use and further commercialisation, which is good for the economy. Most people know The Witcher as either a book, game or TV series, but it has transitioned across all three formats. Through immersive tech, it may yet become a different format. Def: As technology evolves, how can filmmakers stay updated and acquire the necessary skills to adapt to new tools and techniques?

CN: Keep abreast of the news, and experiment with the technology where you can. Speak to the manufacturers, studios and users of the technology – learn from others and don’t be scared to make enquiries and slowly introduce some of these technologies into your work. Everyone’s way of learning is different; some absorb theory, while some learn practically, so don’t be shy: collaborate. Follow topical organisations in the film industry such as IABM, SMPTE, ASC and Stage 32. Sign up to newsletters from relevant providers, follow people on LinkedIn for their feedback and thought leadership on the topics. We don’t have the luxury of downloading a course or attending workshops as it’s evolving so fast – so be open, be playful and considerate. Having an open mind is your strongest armoury.

SP: They can start by embracing a mindset of continuous learning. Stay curious and open to exploring new technologies, techniques and trends in the filmmaking industry. Set time aside for personal projects and experimentation. Trying out new tools and techniques in a low-pressure environment allows you to learn by actively doing. This hands-on experience can be invaluable for skill development. Attend as many film festivals, workshops and conferences as possible that showcase cutting-edge films and technologies. These events often feature panels, demonstrations and discussions on the latest tools and techniques in the industry. Engage with fellow filmmakers, industry professionals and enthusiasts through networking events, which can aid in boosting your visibility.
