around the use of NeRFs and blending scanned assets or locations taken in the real world being uploaded into these gaming engines. Combined with AI, it could see new landscapes and scenes being generated. This may also see different narratives and formats such as documentaries and animation exploring emerging technologies to create new trends of storytelling. I do wonder if NVIDIA may come to the fold here in that regard. Markus Förderer BVK, ASC also introduced Cine Flare at CAMERIMAGE this year, which continues to show how we are digitising looks. We absolutely love to experiment creatively in our industry, but in an automated and easy-to-use manner. I also anticipate more trends to emerge through industry partnerships, reinventing their offerings to support one another and exploring how to support work-life balance. And diversifying crew will also impact visual or narrative trends. ET: This year, we have already seen impressive short films that have been created entirely using AI. This is a trend that will grow in 2024 and we’ll see people with no prior experience

or budget entering the world of filmmaking. Not only do I expect to see more AI-generated shorts, but even feature-length films. As AI technology improves, so will the films themselves. We could witness the birth of an entirely new subgenre next year, AI-generated films, as the democratisation of quality content creation leads to more diverse storytelling styles and narratives. Def: How are filmmakers addressing environmental impact, and what sustainable practices might become standard in the industry as a whole? CN: It’s still a work-in-progress debate, I feel. BAFTA albert is leading the way here, but more organisations are adopting a B Corp approach. With a focus on meeting benchmarks for energy and water consumption, waste generation and carbon emissions, this is the only speedy way forward. Garden Studios, for example, has an extensive programme of film production material upcycling, with clear, impactful results on how much material can be upcycled to other communities and businesses, creating not only a sustainability impact but

a socioeconomic one. More studios are also designing with sustainability in mind, such as RD Studios or Marlow Film Studios’ proposals during planning permission, but unless the entire industry adopts these practices, the fight to maintain a standard will continue. SP: Filming with virtual production sets hugely reduces your carbon footprint compared to filming over multiple locations. Filmmakers are adopting more energy-efficient technologies and practices on-set. This includes using LED lighting, which consumes less energy than traditional lighting, and implementing energy management systems to optimise power usage. Some filmmakers are working towards creating eco-friendly film sets by using sustainable materials for set construction and design. This includes using recycled and recyclable materials to minimise waste. PS: At DNEG, we have taken great care to understand the total environmental impact of how we work and the systems we deploy. Our remote working policies, for example, are
