n a world where everyone is plugged into an information environment, breaking news is as close as your pocket. Journalists

WE WANT TO ENABLE JOURNALISTS TO DO THEIR JOB FROMWHEREVER THE STORY BREAKS

and news organisations compete to be the first to break a story, and cloud-based tools mean newsrooms can collaborate and publish news better than ever before. “The media landscape is changing quickly, especially in news,” says Stuart Almond. “The market is changing most drastically in terms of traditional news delivery. The audience, especially millennials, watch traditional, linear news outlets less. They want to access news through social platforms, and this affects how the journalists are creating news.” In this new paradigm, journalists from anywhere can file a story for anywhere – and in near real time. Sony has added XDCAM Air and Media Backbone Hive to its growing suite of newsroom tools to fulfil this need exactly. Sony’s new vision of the newsroom connects a central hub directly with journalists in the field, leveraging the accessibility and scaleability of cloud services.

Sony’s XDCAM Air is a service for sending story information and metadata from a Newsroom Computer System (NRCS) straight to compatible Sony cameras out in the field. After shooting, content is then ingested automatically to the newsroom’s media asset management system. This uploaded proxy footage, which could come from multiple journalists in multiple locations, can be turned over to logging and editorial immediately, even while the shooting is still going on. When the edit is completed, the XDCAM Air uploads the full-resolution footage selected for the final output. Working in concert with XDCAM Air is Sony’s Media Backbone Hive, which is a home base for all the material gathered

by XDCAM Air-enabled journalists out in the field. Media Backbone Hive lets news teams located anywhere access the ingested content through a single shared system, whether they’re producers in the newsroom or fellow journalists. The platform features planning and scheduling tools, too, which allow newsrooms to automatically send assignments to news crews or mobile journalists. Media Backbone Hive keeps the newsrooms in the network continually updated, linking metadata to news content, as well as allowing approved journalists or collaborators access to content or uploaded material. The platform also makes it easy to publish to multiple digital outlets and social media sites. “The world is changing very fast out there,” says Almond. “We want to enable journalists to do their job from wherever the story breaks.” The need for timely, accurate journalism has never been greater, but with cloud connectivity, there has never been better tools for quickly getting out the stories that matter. As we move into world where content exists in an entirely digital, cloud-centric environment – a ‘post-digital’ industry where content flows like water anywhere it’s directed – the possibilities for content creators and, more importantly, for audiences, are more exciting than ever.
