THE VERDICT If you’re in the market for a mirrorless camera that’s superb for filmmaking and you have around two grand to spend, you can’t go wrong with either of these cameras. If you’re wedded to the Sony system and have lenses to fit, the A7 III makes an obvious buy. Similarly, if you have MFT fit lenses, the Panasonic is the obvious choice – especially if you want to use it alongside a Panasonic EVA-1 or Varicam as a second camera as the colour science will match. Both cameras are capable of making great movies, but both are better at some things than others. And that means your specific use should guide you as to which camera is best for you and your needs. After all, the cameras won five categories each in our test, and drew on the final one. So it’s pretty much a dead heat. That’s unless you demand in-body image stabilisation and fantastic low- light performance, in which case the Sony is the obvious choice. Especially if stills photography is very important to you.

Or if you want the slowest 240fps slow- motion and 60p slow-mo in 4K, then it’s the Panasonic GH5S for you, no question. The Sony builds on the success of the A7S II as a video camera, and mixes in the new-style A9 body, ergonomics, AF and battery life to make it a very capable camera. The GH5S builds on the GH5 and has vectorscopes, waveforms, V-log, built- in LUTs and headline of 60p in Cinema 4K and a Timecode In/Out port. It’s also nice that each option for file size has the bit rate and compression clearly labelled. It’s sensible, and other camera manufacturers should take note. Whichever route you choose, both are amazingly small and capable mirrorless cameras for independent filmmakers that delivers stunning results and won’t give your accountant a heart attack.
