CAMERA: PANASONIC GH5 £1599/$1998 www.panasonic.com

Now around 18 months old, the GH5 may not be the latest in the Lumix G series but has won lots of fans as it’s a great all-rounder at an affordable price. With 20.3 megapixels, wide dynamic range and a low-pass filter to cut moire, this camera was the world’s first mirrorless camera to shoot 4K internally in up to 60p. And for super-slowmotion, it records in HD 180fps and doesn’t overheat, unlike some rival cameras. It can shoot in V-log for a wide dynamic range, although this is a paid-for upgrade. It was also the world’s first interchangeable lens system to offer 4:2:2 10-bit internal recording, while giving users the option of upgrading firmware to a 400Mbps high-bitrate recording mode. It features a 6K photo mode, no sensor cropping and no recording duration limit, as well as a 3680K-dot OLED viewfinder. The five-axis dual image stabiliser eliminates a lot of shake and Panasonic’s own ‘Depth FromDefocus’ technology allows for high-speed AF that’s very useable for video. Built with magnesium alloy, the GH5 can withstand heavy field use. It’s freezeproof down to -10C and is splash- and dust-proof with weather sealing on every part. Weighing only 725g/ 1.6lb, it is an incredibly lightweight, robust and professional camera producing sharp and artefact-free images. It is cheaper than its GH5S stablemate which is aimed purely at filmmakers, but has the benefit of image stabilisation which the S-model omits.

“Although a tad pricey, it can save your audio, especially in windy conditions outdoors”
