DSLR-quality compact Question: I own a Canon DSLR outfit with three lenses, but I’m increasingly leaving it at home due to the weight. Rather than rely on shooting with my phone in these instances, I’d like to buy a used compact with a DSLR level of functionality. I don’t have any particular brand loyalty, I just want a good camera, so what options would the MPB experts recommend?
Marc says: We can recommend three great compacts that will give you the same great image quality that you’re used to, but without breaking the bank (or your back!). First is the Canon Powershot G5 X II, which you can pick up in like-new condition for £699. It’s an advanced compact camera featuring a large sensor, fast processing and a flexible zoom lens all packed into a svelte yet versatile design. Next is the iconic Fujifilm X100F, available in excellent condition at £749. It incorporates a series of advanced imaging capabilities while still retaining its trademark design and intuitive handling. This is more for the purist with a fixed
wide-angle lens, but it does feature an APS-C sized sensor, so quality is easily comparable with a DSLR. Last, if your budget can stretch that little bit further, you can pick up the pocket rocket that is the Sony Cyber-shot RX100 VII in excellent condition at £884. Mixing speed, reach and portability, the Sony is a pocket-sized camera packing a wealth of stills and video versatility. This seventh camera in the esteemed RX100 series is the second to feature the impressive 24-200mm equivalent Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* lens, which covers wide-angle to telephoto focal lengths for greater shooting flexibility in a variety of conditions.
