EDITOR’S CHOICE: BLACKMAGIC URSA MINI PRO 12K OLPF

The Blackmagic Ursa Mini Pro 12K remains the highest-resolution camera you can buy and is now more affordable. The latest adds an OLPF filter for less moiré and is a winner of the Editor’s Choice award in the cinema camera category. It has a 12K sensor of Blackmagic’s own design that gives stunning results, especially when recorded in 4K. But you must shoot in Blackmagic Raw and you’ll need to invest in fast flash memory to record for more than a few minutes. Those 12K Blackmagic Raws give amazing quality with 14 stops of dynamic range and beautiful, filmic colours. In 8K and 4K the quality is staggering, and you can shoot at fast frame rates, too. If you want the best Canon full-frame mirrorless hybrid camera for video then the R5 C is it. It’s cheaper than 8K mirrorless rivals like the Sony A1 and Nikon Z 9, although it lacks their stacked sensor for uninterrupted, high-speed stills shooting. In the camcorder category, live streaming continues to be popular and the evergreen JVC HC550 came close to winning. On top was Canon’s XF605, which used lots of tech from the flagship XF705, as well as features from Canon’s cinema cameras and mirrorless cams, but in a more affordable package. This shoots great footage in 4K and can be used to make high-quality movies. It fits into any modern workflow since it livestreams, can be used for traditional broadcast, records in high quality for post- event editing and even sends footage to your phone for upload to an FTP server. In the new category for PTZ, Sony’s full- frame FR7 and Panasonic’s AW-UE160W/K broadcast system camera were outvoted by PTZ specialist Birddog with its P4K NDI. Birddog’s cameras support video transmission over a local network using Newtek’s Network Device Interface (NDI). The broadcast-level P4K has a 1.0-type BSI Exmor R CMOS sensor for high-quality 10- bit images and a 12x Zeiss zoom lens.
