THE KIT COLINOWNS

FUJIFILM X-T3 The Fujifilm X-T3 is a highly featured camera with a back-side illuminated 26.1-megapixel X-Trans CMOS 4 sensor, X-Processor 4 image processing engine and a native ISO range of 160-12,800. For greater shooting capacity and improved camera handling, the X-T3 can be combined with the VPB-XT3 Vertical Power Booster grip. This weather- and dust-resistant grip takes two batteries, so you can shoot about 1100 shots before needing to recharge. Batteries can also be swapped over without disrupting camera operation.

Raws along with JPEGs, I have to spend a long time working on them to get images better than the out-of-camera JPEGs – they’re that good. I shoot mostly in the standard Provia Film Simulation mode, then play around with the shots in editing software afterwards. That gives me a file I can work with in any direction I want. The only time I use a Film Simulation mode is when shooting black & white. In particular, the setting I like is Acros, with either the yellow or red filter. These make the skin tones a bit brighter, so I compensate by slightly underexposing by 0.3EV or 0.6EV. I usually increase the contrast a little bit, too. With the filters and contrast increase, I find it makes the typical British, grey sky very dramatic. That’s one of my favourite little tricks to use. My work has changed a lot over the past year of the pandemic, and I have been running more workshops. Because we can’t meet indoors, I’ve had to develop what I do. My most popular workshop is what I call “augmented creative lighting” – essentially, it’s portraits taken with flash outside, but they look like they came from the studio. The other great thing about Fujifilm cameras – which is apparent when I’m teaching – is how obvious the controls are, similar to products going back many years. When you’re trying to explain the basic exposure triangle of aperture, shutter speed and ISO, I find this really useful. I even think some of my clients have bought Fujifilm cameras because of this! XF16-80MM F/4 R OIS WR Weighing just 440g and featuring a powerful 6EV benefit Optical Image Stabiliser, the XF16-80mm f/4 R OIS WR is a 5x standard zoom, giving the 35mm equivalent of a 24-122mm lens. It covers a versatile range and is perfect as a take-everywhere option. Its advanced optical construction of 16 elements features three aspherical elements and one ED aspherical element, delivering outstanding performance. With its 35cm minimum focus throughout the focal length, this zoom also has potential for close-up work, too.

XF56MM F/1.2 R With its superfast f/1.2 maximum aperture and a 35mm format equivalent focal length of 85mm, this lens suits a wide range of subject matter, especially people photography. Shoot portraits at its wider apertures and you’ll enjoy lovely, smooth background bokeh, while its sophisticated optical design – featuring 11 elements in eight groups – ensures the subject is pin-sharp.
