or that only really works in those short- lived summer months. As Louisa says, “While this is a look that can definitely be implemented in UK homes, it’s best not to take it too literally. Rather than trying to recreate a holiday villa, focus on the details that give a space that relaxed feel: earthy colours, tactile surfaces, decorative patterns and natural materials.” For the experts, the bathroom is one of the easiest spaces to inject with that Mediterranean feel. “You’re already working with tiles, stone and water; all things that feel inherently Mediterranean,” says James. “Tiles are a way to commit to any form of Mediterranean look. Zellige- style or handmade-effect wall tiles with a slightly uneven finish are hugely popular, and they work beautifully behind basins and in shower areas.” Rough-hewn stone-effect surfaces, matte-finish ceramics and natural fibre accessories, such as woven baskets or linen towels, all add textural depth. Elsewhere, lean into fixtures with softer, more organic shapes. “Rounded countertop basins, curved freestanding baths and arched mirrors all feed into that relaxed, artisan feel. Brassware finishes also make a big difference – brushed gold or aged brass taps and shower fittings feel warm and sun-worn in a way that polished chrome never quite manages,” he adds.
