MEDITERRANEAN STYLE
Mediterranean-inspired interiors are all about balancing light and warmth with coastal design
Above all, the Mediterranean look embraces the qualities of natural materials – like the grain of wood, the rough texture of stone or smooth marble – to add soul to a room. “In the bathroom, the hallmarks are stone, marble and limestone, and an emphasis on textures and patterns. For a more traditional, rustic look, opt for restraint. Choose warm stone fixtures, golden ochres and clay tones, alongside dark, aged wood furniture,” continues James. “For a more minimalist, coastal aesthetic, incorporate neutral or off-white backdrops peppered with azure, blue or turquoise accents.” Keep it realistic Anyone trying to recreate this look at home will want to avoid designing a space that looks overly themed, resulting in a room that may appear forced and inauthentic,
and rustic textures, or modern and minimalist with a brighter, more urban feel. Think choosing between a Spanish finca or a Santorini seaside home.” While there aren’t any two exact colours to choose from when designing an ‘Amalfi core’-style living space, it is worth noting the spectrum of vibrant colours that work well regardless of the room. “Bolder, more energetic colours such as faded blues that replicate the deep blue hues of the Mediterranean or zesty yellows to match the exteriors of the architecture can all work superbly well with this particular style. Consider bright, warm and playful colours such as terracotta and creams,” says Melissa Denham, an interior design expert for Hammonds Furniture. Meanwhile, the deep, earthy tones of natural wooden furniture will always look perfect against a clean white wall.
