WHO MADE THE CHRISTCHURCH TERRORIST? The online content Words by Neal Romanek

On 15 March, a 28-year-old Australian man killed 50 people and injured 50 more at Al Noor Mosque and then at Linwood Islamic Centre in Christchurch, New Zealand during Friday prayer. He livestreamed the first attack – including his drive to and away from from the Al Noor Mosque – via Facebook Live. The stream was accompanied by music, including the military march, The British Grenadiers and a song celebrating Serbian war criminal Radovan Karadžić. Minutes before the attack, the gunman sent a manifesto outlining his hatred of Islam to the office of New Zealand prime minister, Jacinda Ardern. The promise of internet video – or the fantasy – is that it will bring the people of the world closer together. And that seems a logical conclusion. Through global video, we have a window into the lives of our fellow humans, no matter where they live. We can watch stories, news and slices of life that give us a peek into the experiences of people we would never have the opportunity to meet in our day-to-day lives. If I want to go to Mongolia, I can find videos of native speakers who will teach ecosystem has become a battle space. What are we going to do about it?
