33 NEWS FOCUS Social Media Tools

Dalet is providing a similar technology platform, which allows journalists to more efficiently access and analyse the overwhelming amount of digital content generated globally. Dalet’s Galaxy application enables newsrooms to tap into a variety of aggregated content sources. It has access to all the news agency wires, so newsrooms can filter through live video feeds from reporters out in the field. Elnecave explains: “There was a lot of room for creating efficient and effective workflows within news organisations and we wanted to explore that.” Content can also be monitored and imported from social media platforms. Newsrooms can follow one or multiple hashtags and any content carrying those hashtags is imported into the tool.

“For example, if you follow the hashtags #Trump and #NorthKorea, the tool will pull any stories pertaining to both Trump and North Korea," says Elnecave. The tool provides a story editor option, into which desired content can be added using a simple drag and drop. This automatically imports all the metadata, text and images for editing. “Video editing is built into the software, but you can also connect a third-party application, such as Adobe Premiere Pro. Our own editing tool is designed for journalists and it can be used when you’re in the studio, out in the field or on the go. It’s also cloud based, so journalists can mix content from two or three locations,” adds Elnecave. Content doesn’t need to be aired or published right away either – it can be scheduled for a later date. “We have an application that will trigger any scheduled social media or digital posts to be published. That same application can also orchestrate a live television broadcast. It will automate everything you can expect to find in a studio, such as lights, camera placement, audio consoles, etc. It acts like a playlist,” says Elnecave.

Newstag acting CEO, has this message: “Build a bridge between brand and audience and connect people with news that is important and relevant to them.” Newstag has built a tool, Newsroom as a Service (NAAS), that enables users to tap into a library of 50,000 continuously updated clips of events happening in every part of the world. Clips are tagged with a theme by a global user base, which allows searching by theme or topic. “Each clip has metadata, and the audio is automatically transcribed and made searchable. It goes through various systems that even I don’t understand in detail, but I know NAAS allows brands and marketeers to search video material in a smart way. Clips can be searched for by location, language or provider, and every word in a clip can be found,” says Rislund.
