CHESTNUTS ROASTING

O CHRISTMAS TREE

Tackling food poverty, Cambridge charity FoodCycle serves up a hot meal for anyone who needs it from its headquarters in St Andrew’s Street Baptist Church. If you want to play your part, volunteering roles are available, while the Big Give Christmas Challenge is doubling all donations. FoodCycle will also work with Advent of Change and Aviva Community Fund this year. “With the cost-of-living crisis worsening, we need more support than ever to provide a warm space and weekly free meal for communities across the UK,” says CEO Mary McGrath MBE. Arthur Rank Hospice’s mean, green recycling scheme sees a team of volunteers take away your Christmas trees. Covering a range of Cambridge postcodes and picking up trees between 12 and 15 January, all donations go towards the hospice and partner JustHelping. “This is a fantastic, win-win, environmentally friendly appeal,” says fundraiser Bec Beattie. “Around 150 members of the public volunteer their time and we have fantastic companies that support with van hire, chipping the trees, food donations to keep the volunteers fuelled up and much more.” If you’re interested in helping, head to the website at arhc.org.uk

BARK THE HERALD ANGELS SCHNAUZERFEST

This pup-protecting charity was founded by Janetta Harvey after she saw her regular dog walks take off. “Much of the work involves supporting rescues with vet bills for dogs saved from puppy farming and other terrible backgrounds – which is a grim and nasty reality,” explains Janetta. “Keeping the joys of how we began with fun walks at the forefront of the charity is really important.” The Schnauzer-festive season begins with walks and activities to raise funds and awareness.
