BLACKMAGIC CINEMA CAMERA 6K TOOLKIT
MAGIC TOUCH No tricks, just pure versatility from the Blackmagic’s full-frame 6K CMOS sensor
choices impact image quality, so careful selection is crucial. Opting for any of the 6K modes allows for maximum use of the large sensor, despite the relatively pedestrian frame rates of up to 60fps. Boasting 13 stops of dynamic range and dual native ISO starting at 400 and 3200, it’s no low-light monster but still excels in well-lit settings like movie sets. Ideal for projects with time for meticulous editing, it exclusively uses Blackmagic Raw codecs for DaVinci Resolve, bundled with the camera. Unlike the 6K Pro model, it lacks ProRes and external Raw file output, making it less suitable for a quick turnaround, though the 6K camera does automatically generate 1080p proxies for an efficient workflow. Shooting Raw provides the industry- standard control needed for footage correction and grading. These files offer complete flexibility and easily match with footage from other cameras. When integrating 6K footage with other Blackmagic cameras that use
Generation 5 colour science, the process is seamless. But it’s worth noting that, as there’s no in-camera noise reduction, it becomes necessary to add some in post-production. Having Raw files gives you the flexibility to easily adjust colours to match popular production cameras like ARRI. Converting Blackmagic Raw files to formats like ARRI LogC4 and applying ARRI LUTs achieves a close match. This versatility makes it an exceptionally useful B, C or crash camera, especially considering its affordability. When shooting Raw with the 6K camera, you have the flexibility to choose compression levels between 3:1 and 12:1 or quality levels from Q0 to Q4, maintaining a balance between file size and quality. Even in the fully compressed 6K files, the results are remarkable, offering robust, files rich in colour information for extreme grades. The colours remain natural and unsaturated, even in the ‘video’ gamma, adhering to the standard high-definition Rec. 709.
The Extended Video mode expands dynamic range, while the Film setting imparts a more organic, cinematic feel. Standard LUTs include options like changing the Gen 5 Film setting to Extended Video, Rec. 2020 HLG and Rec. OPTING FOR ANY OF THE 6K MODELS ALLOWS FOR maximum use OF THE large sensor ”
