THE PANEL

Definition: What technological advancements do you anticipate will have the most significant impact on filmmaking in 2024? Shaki Prasanna: As cameras become smaller and more powerful, more budget can be allocated to VFX and post- production. A great example of this is The Creator , which deployed Sony FX3s paired with an Atomos Ninja and DJI Ronin to create an IMAX movie! It was so compact and portable, the director could operate the camera rig himself. That’s not to say every director is going to shoot their own film, but it opens a host of possibilities if the camera budget can be used elsewhere. The iPhone 15 Pro’s filmmaking capability has already created a trend with people making videos on how to make the best cinematic iPhone rigs. Any tool that becomes smaller, lighter and more compact gives filmmakers the freedom and opportunity to make more with less. Ed Thomas: Real-time virtual production technologies have matured and will enhance the entire filmmaking process in 2024, transcending traditional methods like LED walls. Until now, studios have still been learning their capabilities and how they fit into the production pipeline. It will be the first year where real-time tech can be effectively implemented from the start of a project — reducing costs, boosting efficiency and unlocking a new realm of creativity that will continue to push the boundaries of engaging content. One of the phrases I love when it comes to real-time technology is ‘fail faster’. In a traditional pipeline, the cost and time required to go back and make changes to content has been so great that it wasn’t viable, unless necessary. Next year, real time will give directors the power to experiment without consequence, at any stage of the production. As a result, I expect to see a leap in quality and creativity next year. Paul Salvini: I anticipate AI and real time to be the two technologies that will have the most significant impact on filmmaking in 2024. AI technologies and applications continue to advance at an astonishing rate and will continue to find their way into the tools of the trade –
