ABOVE Hive specialises in colour mixing LED hard light and predicts control and control systems – on the light and remotely – as the next big thing in lighting.

“Near the end of Star Wars , DOP Steve Yedlin and I started getting into all the FX stuff,” Presant continues. “We ran the tail end of Star Wars in XY. Rampage was the first movie that was fully XY. Every light that could run XY was in that mode and everything we could conform to it was. It gave us unbelievable control and accuracy.” Comparatively few lights support XY colour coordinates and Presant accepts that new approaches can involve some retraining for even the most experienced crews, but ARRI is not the only company talking about the idea. DMG LUMIÈRE DMG Lumière by Rosco is winning awards with its MIX LED light technology and is maturing the range with a great app (whereby you can mix, capture, save and share your creations) and new sizes like the MINI. The unique six LEDs have opened up a vast colour spectrum, which also contains verified Rosco Gels. Jonathan Miller is co-founder and chief product officer at Hive Lighting. He summarises the history of LED colour: “It went from wondering if we can create a decent white light and what

Almost every manufacturer is also keen to discuss options for controlling lights. One development is the option to specify lighting colours as a pair of two numbers representing an XY coordinate on a CIE 1931 chromaticity diagram, rather than a gel number. Jaron Presant, ASC DOP, has shot television, commercials and features including Rampage , Hours and Ten Stories Tall , and second unit work for Star Wars: The Last Jedi . Specifying colour by CIE coordinate has, Presant says, been something of a revelation, particularly in conjunction with ARRI’s well-liked SkyPanel. “You can run [SkyPanels] in XY. You can deliver to the light a precise chromaticity coordinate and it responds with that exact chromaticity coordinate. Even through dimming, it’s really consistent,” he says.
