1 Oskar winners Venezuelan photographer

Alejandro Cegarra has been given the prestigious Leica Oskar Barnack Award (LOBA) for his series The Two Walls . In creating this project, he went to the borderlands between Mexico and the USA to document the plight of migrants, shedding light on their dramatic situation in traditional black & white reportage style. Cegarra had previously won the Newcomer Award back in 2014. This year, the aforementioned Newcomer Award went to Moldovan/ German photographer Serghei Duve for his series entitled Bright Memory , a poignant exploration of his family’s roots in Transnistria – a breakaway Moldovan region that is sustained by Russian support. His series captures nostalgia and identity through the lens of personal history. The news was announced in a ceremony at Leica headquarters in Wetzlar, Germany, with Cegarra receiving €40,000 plus €10,000 worth of Leica equipment, while Serghei received €10,000 and a Leica Q3. Now in its 45th year, LOBA remains one of the world’s most respected documentary photography prizes. The winning works are on show at the Ernst Leitz Museum in Wetzlar, before they tour the Leica Galleries around the world. leica-oskar-barnack-award.com
