International Sailing Federation to run the global eSailing World Championship and eSailing Nations Cup through its Virtual Regatta Inshore game, one of many real-world partnerships, which now also include a virtual Vendée Globe. Based in Paris, Virtual Regatta consists of a lean 15-person crew, most of whom are developers. But with e-sailing becoming bigger and bigger, Guigné is looking to enlarge the team – those who aren’t big fans of sailing need not apply! What may be surprising is the enthusiasm experienced by real-world sailors –

people with experience of the sun, waves and spray of the open sea – for e-sailing. E-sailing parties are a regular occurrence at sailing clubs all over
the world, especially when circumstances make it impossible to get a boat out on to the water.
“Sailing is a beautiful sport, but the big problem is that it’s difficult to practise,” says Guigné. “You need to be near water, have a boat, potentially a crew, the correct weather with the right amount of wind and it needs to be daytime. Passionate sailors dream of sailing 99% of the time, but they only sail 1% of the time. It’s the opposite of running, where I just need my shoes and I’m off.” Guigné has used his own experience to ensure Virtual Regatta is underpinned by the principles of real sailing, and he believes sailing is already a sport that lends itself perfectly to gaming.
