CHANGING TIMES

Schools in our area may have seen it all before, but don’t underestimate how children may be feeling – even if they don’t always show it. Specific transitions come with their own challenges, too. Take that move to senior school, where children who were previously the most senior members of their primary or prep school community just a few months ago suddenly have to adjust to life as the newest pupils when they start in year 7 or 9.

That move into secondary school can mean a big shift in independence. The end-of-day routine at primary school, for example, often sees pupils discharged only when their teachers have seen them safely back into their parents’ care at home time. At senior school, it’s all change. While some parents still collect children when the last lesson finishes, many will make their way home on their own, visit friends or go into town – for the first time getting a taste of life in the real world.
