IT’S BEEN A busy few weeks for lens launches, with many of the big players announcing new additions to their line-ups. The likes of Canon, Sony, Sigma, Leica, Hasselblad and Tamron have all got in on the action. At the wide end, Hasselblad has released its first ultra-wide zoom for the XCD E series, while Sigma’s 10-18mm f/2.8 brings speed and portability to L-Mount and Sony E-mount. At the other end of the scale, Leica has expanded its SL-System

range with the 70-200mm f/2.8 and Tamron introduced big zooms for Nikon and Sony users. Canon’s new 28-70mm f/2.8 should pique the interest of documentarians and the Sony FE 85mm f/1.4 GM II brings promises of portrait perfection. Let’s be honest, I’m writing this at the end of a UK summer that left a lot to be desired weather-wise. But what it lacked in sunshine, it sure made up for in sporting action. We were in the midst of Euro 2024 when I was last addressing you, looking forward to England’s quarter-final clash with Switzerland although blissfully unaware of the rollercoaster ahead! At the same time, we were watching legends of world tennis battling it out at Wimbledon, before the beginning of sport’s greatest spectacle – the Olympics and Paralympics. And what a spectacle it was! Aside from the mindblowing talents of all these sportsmen and sportswomen, something I found truly fascinating was the coverage: the way the incredibly compelling imagery plucked us all from our everyday lives around the globe and plunged us directly into the heart of the action. It was tremendous! This is in no small part down to the advancement of technology, which is constantly putting ever more powerful tools into the hands of the talented image makers that capture such awesome visuals. Indeed, this summer also saw

Nikon’s new nifty fifty The latest addition to Nikon’s Z series is the full- frame Nikkor Z 50mm f/1.4 prime lens. It joins the existing 35mm f/1.4 Z series fast-aperture prime and promises shallow depth-of-field perfect for portraits and creative background effects. Additionally, a minimum focus distance of 0.37m means the lens lends itself well to close-up shots. The autofocus system – which makes use of Nikon’s multi-focusing technology – delivers fast and quiet operation, making it well-suited to photography and videography. This is reinforced with features like reduced focus breathing and support for manual focus pulling, providing greater control for videographers. Weighing approximately 420g, the Z 50mm f/1.4 has been built with portability in mind. It includes weather sealing around the moving parts of the lens barrel for additional protection against the elements. Hasselblad’s first XCD E ultra-wide zoom

At its widest setting of 20mm, the XCD 3,2-4,5/20-35E offers the broadest field of view available in Hasselblad’s medium format system. It includes a stepping motor as well as a compact focusing lens group designed to offer precise and quiet focusing. This is supported by phase detection AF technology when paired with compatible Hasselblad cameras. The XCD 3,2-4,5/20-35E is constructed with a metal body and incorporates a leaf shutter that’s capable of flash synchronisation at shutter speeds up to 1/2000sec. Tamron introduces 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3

The Tamron 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 Di III VC VXD is a new telephoto zoom lens designed for Nikon Z mount full-frame mirrorless cameras. The 50-400mm f/4.5-6.3 VC stands out for its extensive 8x zoom range and relative portability, weighing 1180g and measuring 185.8mm in length. The AF system is driven by Tamron’s VXD linear motor, which the company says has a particular focus on tracking moving subjects. The lens also enjoys Tamron’s image stabilisation technology to help at longer focal lengths. Another notable aspect of the 50-400mm lens is its close focusing capability, allowing for a minimum object distance of 0.25m at 50mm. This enables users to achieve a 1:2 magnification ratio at the wider end of the zoom range. The lens includes additional features such as moisture-resistant construction, a fluorine coating on the front element and compatibility with Tamron’s Lens Utility software, which provides options for customising optical functions and updating firmware. Tamron’s 28-300mm f/4-7.1 Di III VC VXD zoom lens offers a 10.7x zoom range – from 28mm wide angle to 300mm telephoto – in a compact form. The lens features Tamron’s Voice-coil eXtreme-torque Drive linear motor focus mechanism, providing fast and accurate focusing across the entire zoom range. Additionally, it includes the brand’s Vibration Compensation technology to help stabilise images, particularly at the telephoto end, as well as in low- light conditions. With a close focusing distance of 0.19m at the wide end and a maximum magnification ratio of 1:2.8, the lens also supports macro photography. News New Canon EOS C80 cinema camera

The EOS C80 mirrors the compact form factor of the EOS C70 but also boasts updated ergonomics, including a redesigned top handle and brighter LCD screen. It also introduces a new multi- function shoe, expanding compatibility with audio accessories. The camera supports Canon’s PL-to-RF mount adapter, enabling the use of industry- standard PL mount cinema lenses. Connectivity features include built-in Wi-Fi and Ethernet, supporting remote control, file transfer and IP streaming. The camera offers multiple recording formats, including 12-bit Cinema Raw Light at up to 6K/30p, along with MP4 options like XF-AVC S and XF-HEVC S, which balance image quality with manageable file sizes. canon.co.uk

Canon has announced the release of the EOS C80, a new RF mount cinema camera aimed at professional filmmakers and live production teams. The camera continues the company’s Cinema EOS line and features a back- side illuminated stacked CMOS sensor, which supports full-frame 6K recording and 16 stops of dynamic range. It also includes a triple-base ISO system (800, 3200, 12,800) for adjusting to changing lighting conditions automatically. Canon’s Dual Pixel CMOS AF II system has been enhanced in this model, offering advanced tracking for faces, eyes, heads and even bodies and animals. According to Canon, these enhancements make sure that the EOS C80 keeps up in even the most complex shooting scenarios.

Canon updates desktop printer Canon’s latest A2 desktop printer – the ImagePrograf Pro-1100 – is designed with professional photographers and enthusiasts in mind. It features the newly developed Lucia Pro II pigment ink system which, according to Canon, provides a broader colour spectrum than the previous ImagePrograf Pro-1000 model. The printer’s ink technology also offers improved light fastness; prints are expected to maintain their quality for up to 200 years, making it suitable for archival purposes. The printer is equipped with a 12-ink pigment system designed to produce smooth colour transitions and deeper blacks and blues, which could be particularly useful for landscape and seascape photography. Additionally, the inclusion of matte black ink is intended to enhance black density on matte papers, and is therefore a solid choice for black & white photography. For glossy and semi-glossy finishes, the ImagePrograf Pro-1100 utilises Chroma Optimiser technology to achieve uniform glossiness. The printer’s design also includes features for scratch resistance, which can help protect prints during handling, framing and display. The ImagePrograf Pro-1100 is also compatible with Canon’s Professional Print & Layout software and shares the same print head and inks as larger models in the Canon range. The Black and White Photo Awards 2024 unveiled its winners, marking the competition’s most successful edition yet. Now in its third year, the contest received nearly 5000 submissions from photographers globally and culminated on World Photography Day (19 August), where Haikun Liang emerged as the Absolute Winner with his captivating image Destroy Together (shown here on the left). The image depicts a vibrant scene from the Chinese Spring Festival and earned Liang a €1000 prize, sponsored by Sandisk. László Tóth claimed the Special Award for Creativity with his innovative piece Spiral to the Tower, featuring a striking spiral formation of birds. Other category winners include Florian Kriechbaumer for architecture; Zhenhuan Zhou for street; Van Dong Nguyen for portrait; Anup Shah for fauna and flora; and Matteo Strassera for landscape. Each winner received €150 and access to advanced AI-based editing tools. Home film processing comes to UK

Benro releases Supadupa 72 monopod

This new device aims to facilitate professional film development within a home setting. According to Capix, the AGO fits easily into the home and is intended to replicate the traditional darkroom experience while incorporating modern features for improved convenience and efficiency. The AGO is capable of developing various types of film – including black & white, C-41, E-6, ECN-2 and RA4 paper. It is compatible with the Paterson Super System 4, which allows it to process different film formats and tank sizes, including up to an eight-reel 35mm film tank. Smartphone prints in an Instax

The Instax Mini Link 3 is the latest in the company’s range of portable instant smartphone photo printers. A key feature is its compatibility with Instax Air Studio, enabling users to add 3D augmented reality (AR) effects to their photos before printing. The app's AR effects include various backgrounds and decorative elements – such as confetti, spotlights and sprinkles – providing users with more creative options. The printer also includes a Click to Collage mode, which is an in-app feature that captures six images at three-second intervals. This mode allows users to create photobooth-style collages by selecting two, four or six images to be printed together. As with all Instax products, the Mini Link 3 is available in a number of fun colours. This time, it’s Sage Green, Rose Pink and Clay White. Its small, rounded design and textured finish promises easy handling and portability. The device also features three front-facing LED lights for status updates and is charged via a USB-C port hidden beneath a flap on its side. Alongside the printer, Fujifilm is also releasing a new mini film, Sprinkles . The film – which complements the Air Studio effects – boasts a sprinkle pattern inspired by cake toppings and sweets.
