A select list of retailers and service providers offer a helping hand to filmmakers day in, day out, so it’s time to honour the best. Two of our categories are for retailers – one for those who specialise in new, and one for used equipment. A few of the biggest are CVP, Wex, B&H and MPB, and these are nominated. Some names are smaller and focus on personal service, while others are general resellers that still offer plenty of value- added extras to make the difference. For rental houses, some specialise in one thing, but others can give you enough equipment to make a feature film, including lighting trucks packed full of gear. Which gets your vote? Our final crop of categories are for the innovations that should be celebrated for their technological creativity or impact. In our launch of the year and innovation shortlists, Blackmagic has three full-frame cameras – one hybrid and two cinema cams – with incredible spec at affordable prices compared to rivals. The Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K is a hybrid that offers great quality, while the compact cinema camera Pyxis 6K has a choice of lens mounts and the Ursa Cine 12K is now fitted with a larger sensor. Add in the free phone app that turns your smart device into a raw-shooting version of a Blackmagic cinema camera, and there is no shortage of innovation. Similarly, Atomos has its Ninja Phone that turns a smartphone into a fully featured streaming monitor. DJI also has nominations for its Mini 4 Pro drone, Ronin 4D-8K cinema camera and Osmo Pocket 3 gimbal cam. And the Freefly Ember S2.5K shoots incredible slow motion.
