GEAR OF THE YEAR
AUDIO There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to capturing stunning sound and our shortlist reflects that. Some are new arrivals that push the latest tech – while others are well-proven products that can work for decades. In the XLR mic category, that’s certainly the case for the Rode NTG5, Sennheiser MKE 600 and MKH 416. But they are in competition with two small shotguns from emerging mic brand Rycote, as well as the Sanken CS-3e and Audio-Technica BP4029 which offer some unique features. For on-camera mics, the Joby Wavo Pro, Sennheiser MKE 400 and MKE 200, Rode’s Videomic Go II and Videomic NTG are popular choices. But with the latest crop of mics using proprietary multi-interface hotshoe systems to eliminate cables and batteries, the Canon DM-E1D and Sony ECM-M1 may be worth a vote.

In the audio recorder/adapter category, 32-bit float technology is a growing force, so check out the Tascam Portacapture X8 and Zoom’s latest Essential range. For adapters, the Beachtek DXA- Max lets you use XLR mics on any camera, while the Sennheiser Profile USB is an ideal mic for streaming. Wireless mics continue to pack in even more technology. The Rode Wireless Pro is a full-featured, yet very small wireless audio and 32-bit float recorder with full app control. And the latest DJI Mic 2 now offers a connector to clip the transmitter to the MI Shoe of Sony cameras to lose the cables and need for a battery. Shure’s new SLX-D system is a high-end pro wireless audio kit taking on the mighty Sennheiser, Rode and Deity systems. So make your voice heard!
