GEAR OF THE YEAR

LENSES

Cameras might come and go, but lenses will give lasting service for many years, even decades, so it’s best to choose wisely. What’s right for one filmmaker isn’t for another, so we have categories to showcase different optics such as AF zooms or primes for mirrorless, manual focus cine zooms and primes – the latter often includes anamorphic lenses, the holy grail for many. Some brands have AF lenses far more suitable for filmmaking than the DSLR versions of old, with de- clickable iris and focus breathing compensation. Sony continues to be a leader here with lenses like its 300mm f/2.8 G Master prime, which is by far the lightest super-telephoto of its kind from any manufacturer – and the 16-35mm f/2.8 GM II zoom with lots of improvements. Indie brand Tamron continues to gain ground thanks to optics like its 35-150mm zoom – f/2 at the wide end, closing down to f/2.8 at the telephoto end – and the 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VC VXD G2 telezoom. Canon’s new RF 24-105mm L brings a fast f/2.8 aperture to this popular zoom range for the first time. And the CN-R range finally sees Canon offer cine primes that suit the latest RF-mount cameras. Sigma is also impressing with its 70-200mm f/2.8 DG DN OS and 50mm f/1.2 DG DN Art. The heavyweight Fujinon Duvo HZK 24-300mm T2.9 offers stunning quality and a fast aperture over a massively convenient zoom range. The Zeiss LWZ.3 21-100mm T2.9-3.9 continues to be a dream purchase for many and Irix’s new 65mm cine prime offers great quality and affordability. It’s the year Cooke and Zeiss both offered new cine prime ranges ideal for mirrorless or smaller cinema cameras. The Cooke SP.3 offers the unique look, while Zeiss Nano primes bring the Zeiss quality to a wider fanbase. Anamorphic shooters will love Sirui’s affordable line, while Schneider-Kreuznach’s Isco4all set combines three stand-alone spherical cine primes with an Iscorama anamorphic front adapter so you have the best of both worlds. For lens accessories, nominated filters include Schneider-Kreuznach Classic ND and Diopter Spots, while IB/E filters use natural materials. The Vocas MB-455 matte box is nominated, as is the Autocue Explorer 17in which is ideal for smaller productions.
