AWARDS
GEAR OF THE YEAR
WHICH KIT IS CRUCIAL? The Pro Moviemaker Gear of the Year Awards celebrate the very best equipment and services – and are voted for by you!
P ro filmmakers rely on swathes of equipment to help deliver their artistic visions. From cameras and lenses to tripods, gimbals, software, lighting and much more, these crucial kit choices can make or break your next project – even your reputation. So it’s vital to know what’s simply good and what’s truly superb. That’s what the Pro Moviemaker Gear of the Year Awards are about. Now in their eighth year, these awards are recognised globally as a mark of success that helps filmmakers invest in the best. Our unique accolades are voted for by the people who use the kit every day – people like you. Here, innovation and excellence combine with value and reliability to prove what’s worth the cash. The testers at Pro Moviemaker have compiled a shortlist of what we feel are the best kit and services around. But it’s down to readers to decide who wins.
Please tell us about the brands that have made a big difference to your working life. Just go online and complete our quick and easy survey to help decide. You do not have to vote in all categories, just the ones in which you have experience or a viewpoint to share. Getting involved is simple and you don’t have to register. Voting runs until 26 September , so go to promoviemaker.net and follow the Gear of the Year link to vote. You can make your selections in as few or as many categories as you’d like. Everyone that votes will be entered into a prize draw and the first name pulled out at random will win a case of champagne. On top of the core awards, we also give out several Editor’s Choice accolades for the equipment we feel is deserving of special recognition in certain key categories. But the real winners are all voted for by professional filmmakers, which makes these awards so important. Please have your say!
CAMERAS From cinema cameras to mirrorless marvels and hybrid heroes, there are lots of classes in the flagship section of cameras. Maybe 2024 will be remembered as the year where the nasty skewed verticals of rolling shutters finally came to an end. A global shutter now features in cameras such as the Red V-Raptor X – the first full-frame cinema camera with a global shutter – or the much more attainable Sony A9 III that’s the first mirrorless to use this technology. Maybe Fujifilm’s GFX100 II is your dream cam, thanks to its huge sensor that gives a unique look you can’t get any other way. Perhaps the Nikon Z 8, sibling of last year’s mirrorless winner the Z 9, gets your vote as it uses the majority
