DIARY DATES British Urban Film Festival 17-25 October The 19th British Urban Film Festival – which celebrates diverse independent filmmaking – will take place this October. Taking a hybrid approach with programming in both London and Halifax, it has two new faces this year, with Jennifer G Robinson serving as festival director and Laurelle Jones as artistic director. Leeds International Film Festival 1-17 November Leeds International Film Festival returns to west Yorkshire this November. The full programme will go live in October, but A Different Man , The Substance and Oddity have already been confirmed in the line-up. Besides screenings, the festival also provides a range of Q&As, panel discussions and other talks from renowned filmmakers.

American Film Market 5-10 November

The American Film Market will hit Las Vegas’ Palms Casino Resort this November, having moved from its usual Los Angeles location. Exhibitors already set to attend include A24, Lionsgate, NEON, Pathé Films and StudioCanal; major Hollywood studios and streamers have yet to confirm.

FOOT IN THE DOOR INITIATIVE ELECTS TWO TRAINEES

W ith a mission to encourage young talent and promote on-set health and safety, the Mark Milsome Foundation (MMF) has selected two trainees – Henry Piekarczyk and Codie Rees – for its annual Foot in the Door (FITD) mentorship initiative. A one-year scheme which brings budding talent from full-time education into the industry, FITD provides opportunities for camera department trainees from underrepresented backgrounds. Tutors around the UK are invited to nominate two graduating students. Piekarczyk and Rees will train in health and safety via the MMF Production Safety Passport, be matched with industry-established mentors, take part in site visits and

workshops with technical houses and receive additional support from the Foundation, including advice from agent Sarah Prince. “For so long, film and TV have been a place where who you know has been more important than what you know,” begins MMF chair Samantha Wainstein. “While in recent times that has begun to change, it is still hard for even the most talented students to get a foot in the door. Our scheme offers support and mentorship for a small number of exceptional individuals who – for various reasons – might struggle to get that crucial first job.” FITD is made possible by Mission Digital, Panavision, Panalux, Cinelab, First Aid Matters, Garden Studios and CallTime.

The AI Creative Summit – targeting the M&E industry – comes to BFI Southbank on 6 November. Blending keynotes, panels, workshops and networking opportunities, the event will cover ethics around AI, audience engagement and data-driven storytelling, as well as other emerging trends and technologies shaping the industry. EnergaCAMERIMAGE 16-23 November Returning to Toruń, Poland in November, EnergaCAMERIMAGE International Film Festival honours the art of cinematography first and foremost. This year’s edition, juried by Cate Blanchett, will also recognise Steve McQueen and Hiroyuki Sanada with awards for directing and acting, respectively.
