then select the section of the video clip that you want to export to a format like Apple ProRes for use in your NLE. No doubt this software will improve, and a highlight recovery function would be a nice addition. But let’s hope Pixboom keeps its simplicity and intuitiveness in any updates. Frame rate truths There is more to be said about the Spark’s frame rates. The headline of 1000fps in 4K and 1800fps in 2K is real, but it is not the full story. It all depends on the crop you set, as the narrower the depth, the faster the frame rate can be. So yes, there are 4K options at 1000fps, but for a standard 16:9 4K it’s 887fps. We

largely used 3.8K in 16:9 at 937fps. For even more speed, 2K 16:9 in a Super 16 crop gives 1724fps. There are anamorphic options and 4.6K 3:2 open gate, but the taller the crop, the slower the frame rates will be. However, you are unlikely to need more speed or resolution with the Spark. Autofocus is also absent, though future firmware updates may improve lens communication and feature support. We paired the camera with a Fujinon 50- 135mm manual zoom from Fujifilm, and it was an ideal match. It’s light, responsive and, as it only covers Super 35 sensors, not a hugely popular lens. It is also affordable, especially if you buy one used. Because the camera is brand new, its long-term reliability remains unproven,

PMM rating: 9/10 When you see liquid as if it’s frozen in space, glass exploding into crystalline fragments or human motion stretched into dreamlike abstraction at 1000fps, filmmaking suddenly feels like magic again. The Spark lets you do this more easily than ever and will reignite your imagination. If you can afford it, buy it. but we had no issues at all during our period of testing. It’s built incredibly well and does a great job. Crucially, the Spark feels important in a way few cameras do any more. Pixboom looked at the market and realised filmmakers still crave tools that enable creativity.
