Verdict For many, the new Sony AR7 VI could make more sense than the more expensive Sony A1 II. You will lose a little outright speed, but at the same time gain substantially more resolution, while retaining much of the flagship’s AF and shooting experience. With the AR7 VI, Sony has not only built a genuine megapixel monster but also the first-ever truly uncompromising high-resolution hybrid. Sony has clearly paid attention to ergonomics too. Earlier A7R models could feel cramped with large lenses attached, but a deeper grip improves handling by a significant margin. The 9.44-million-dot EVF is a stunner, offering superb clarity and refresh rates that finally make electronic viewfinders feel truly natural. Sony’s four-axis screen design also returns, combining tilt and full articulation for both photographers and video shooters. Of course, the price is significant at £4399 ∕ $4498 body only, placing it firmly in professional territory. Storage requirements are substantial, and editing 67-megapixel files or 8K footage demands serious computing power. But it’s difficult not to be impressed as the A7R VI feels like Sony finally removing the compromises traditionally attached to high-resolution cameras. Instead of being a niche specialist tool, this is now a genuinely versatile flagship capable of shooting fashion campaigns one day, wildlife the next and high-end video production to top it all off.
