The Sony A7R VI takes the traditionally slow high-resolution camera and turns it into a genuine do-it-all hybrid machine

ony’s A7R series has been the choice for photographers

who crave detail above everything else, but its

use as a serious filmmaking tool has never been a top priority. Landscape, studio and commercial photographers loved the enormous files and immense dynamic range, but there was always a trade-off. High resolution usually meant slower readout speeds, reduced burst performance and rolling shutter issues that made action and serious video work less appealing. The new Sony A7R VI changes that. This is no longer simply a high-resolution camera. It’s Sony attempting to merge the worlds of ultra detailed stills, professional hybrid video and speed into one body. And remarkably, it succeeds, coming perilously close to the flagship A1 II in many ways and exceeding it in some – but not all. At the heart of the camera is a new 66.8-megapixel full-frame stacked Exmor RS sensor paired with Sony’s latest Bionz XR2 processor. That stacked architecture is the key to everything as readout speeds are far quicker than previous A7R models, unlocking blackout-free stills shooting at up to 30fps, dramatically reducing rolling shutter and making the camera feel much closer to a stacked-sensor A1 series body For photographers, the impact is huge. Wildlife, sports and action shooters no longer need to choose between speed and megapixels. The A7R VI captures extraordinary detail while still tracking subjects with frightening accuracy thanks to Sony’s AI-powered Real-time Recognition AF+ system. While many online pundits claim the camera is an ‘A1 beater’, the flagship camera has faster AF. than any previous A7R. Advantage Alpha

What it is: Highest-res full-frame mirrorless with a 66.8-megapixel stacked BSI CMOS sensor shooting up to 8K∕30p, 4K∕120p in XAVC Stills: 30fps with AF∕AE pre- capture, composite Raw Autofocus: Phase, object and contrast detection, 759 points Image stabilisation: 5-axis sensor-shift, 8.5 stops Lens mount: Sony E Screen: 4-axis 3.2in touchscreen, 2.1m dots Memory: 2x CFexpress Type A or SD Weight: 665g∕1.5lb body only

For filmmakers and hybrid creators, the stacked sensor is the biggest leap Sony has made in the A7R line. Where previous versions felt like stills-first tools, the A7R VI is genuinely capable of pro video without compromise. The headline spec is internal 8K recording up to 30p, oversampled from roughly 8.2K capture for exceptional detail. There’s a modest 1.2x crop in 8K mode, but rolling shutter performance
