Size matters The Sirui AF lenses are the perfect size for smaller cinema or mirrorless cams like this Sony A7S III

Fake it ’til you make it!

To approximate the look of anamorphic with conventional optics, careful choice of focal length and cropping can get you close. To get the look of a specific anamorphic at a set aperture, you need to use a lens of the same focal length but take a step or two back so it gives the right angle of view. To replicate the depth-of- field, you need to shoot a wider aperture and then crop the footage in post. If you want to fake the long, horizontal streaks of an anamorphic lens, you could try crude DIY options like applying fishing line across the lens. But there are filters designed for the job, such as Schneider- Kreuznach’s True-Streaks. For ovalised bokeh, though, you’re out of luck!
