If, however, you’re intrigued by the more holistic IB curriculum, speak to Tim Hipperson, deputy head at Gresham’s, a historic boarding school in North Norfolk. “Our curriculum offers significant choice,” says Tim. “For those seeking more breadth or who find choosing only three subjects difficult, the IB offers an alternative. Its philosophical and internationalist approach encourages learners to be reflective and outward looking, emboldening pupils to extend their study of languages, sciences, maths and the humanities. The BTEC courses offer a more vocational approach to study as they’re based on practical and realistic scenarios. The assessment is linear and the modules offer mainly assignments with some formal exams. All our courses are chosen to ensure pupils are inquisitive and industrious from their very first lessons.” Gresham’s offers BTEC diplomas in agriculture, digital music production or sport for those who wish to blend learning and getting to grips with their future work. If you’re having trouble choosing between course types, Stoke College boasts the whole bunch. “Stoke College offers 16 A-levels, three vocational BTECs, and a unique sixth form diploma in global competencies (in its entirety, worth one whole A-level in UCAS terms, and drawing upon IB philosophy). It’s an exceptional working environment that facilitates independent learning, and is fabulous preparation for university life – all set in a bespoke sixth form centre,” says Jacob. “We also share outstanding career advice with your own individual mentor, complemented by exceptional pastoral care and a tremendous atmosphere of fun, positivity and productivity.” The Perse focuses on four main areas: “Excellent academic teaching and enrichment opportunities, a high level of pastoral care, providing a rich and varied extracurricular programme, as well as comprehensive higher education advice and support,” explains Guy. Ultimately, pupils doing the best they can is the goal. “Aspiration and leadership are the expectation,” says Robin. “We’re proud that we take girls from a diverse set of backgrounds and educate them to recognise their strengths and potential. Our Catholic ethos helps us reflect on our good fortune and encourages us to look outwards at how we can best serve others.

There’s no compromise at St Mary’s – we believe that each student is capable of great things. These may encompass Oxbridge (two of our 40 applicants went last year), or they might just as easily be early-years childcare, costume design or art school (all destinations for our girls in 2022).” Whatever setting you select for your child’s further education, make sure you are prioritising their passions, thinking strategically about what’s next and giving them all the support they will need to flourish both in school and beyond.
