Q: Whenever I try to decide where to eat, my mind automatically jumps to chain restaurants as the easiest option. I’d like to try some more local restaurants, but I don’t know what’s out there. What would you say are the best Cambridge ‘alternatives’ to popular chains? A: You’re definitely not alone in your dilemma. So often when we’re choosing where to eat, we revert to the comfort of somewhere tried and tested. In a chain restaurant, you’re safe in the knowledge that you’ve eaten here (or somewhere very similar) before, so you can easily predict what will be on the menu, how much it will cost and whether you’ll enjoy it. And I’m not denying that chain restaurants have their place, especially if you have strict dietary requirements which need careful preparation and a thorough awareness of cross-contamination and allergens. However, since you’re asking for recommendations, the good news is that there is a wealth of Cambridge independents offering food as good as (and, let’s be honest, better than) your favourite chain restaurants. The first stop should be Foodstuff: a delivery service that supports local businesses and independents. The company boasts 100% emission-free delivery thanks to its fleet of pedal-powered riders, and you can either choose for food to be delivered to you, or click and collect from a restaurant
OVEN LOVIN’ For dough fans, try Oscar’s Lockdown Pizza (above), just one of the city’s indie hotspots
The patties are made from pasture-fed Norfolk beef and the milk bread buns are supplied by local bakery Grain Culture. You can even snag S&H from the newly opened Tivoli, if you fancy a bite after playing indoor crazy golf. For vegans, there really isn’t a better option than Doppleganger. Even if you’re not plant- based, the inventive menu, crispy fries and decadent milkshakes (salted caramel brownie, anyone?) are sure to satisfy. PIZZA I’ve saved the best for last. Looking for sourdough pizza with a beautifully charred crust and tasty toppings? Scott’s All Day has got all bases covered, from a classic margherita to the hefty ‘Mill Road Full House’, which includes Sicilian sausage from Mill Road Butchers and mangalica from Culinaris. If you’re particularly partial to a delicious dipping sauce, then Oscar’s Lockdown Pizza at the Blue Moon is the place for you. The flavour combinations are truly mouth-watering, with 48-hour fermented dough and an addictive tarragon and garlic dip – and every topping is also available in a vegan version. So no one has to miss out on incredible pizza. Now go forth and eat – there’s a world
options – ranging from arroz de carnitas at La Latina Bustaurante to kashmiri murgh at Tawa Kitchen. You’ll be spoilt for choice. COFFEE SHOPS Looking for somewhere to quickly grab a hot drink and a bite to eat? For bean aficionados, Bould Brothers Coffee certainly hits the spot. There are two locations – Round Church Street and Regent Street – where you can also pick up a tasty pastry if you’re peckish, but the focus is definitely on the coffee. For classic brunch fare, you can’t go wrong with Hot Numbers, which also has two locations – Gwydir Street and Trumpington Street – and offers pork tacos, buttermilk pancakes and Turkish eggs to accompany your latte.
