GEAR CHRISTMAS WISH LIST

What do top DOPs want to see under their trees?

Laurie Rose, BSC (Rebecca, Peaky Blinders, The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power) s) “It would have to be a big tree, but I’d like a Filmotechnic Technoscope F27 please Santa! When shooting The Rings of Power

Season 2, block three DOP Jean Philippe Gossart, AFC had added a Technoscope F27 crane to the grip kit for a location shoot. It was love at first sight – it’s a 27ft/8m lightweight, carbon-fibre, telescopic crane with a payload capacity perfect for carrying a fully loaded DJI Ronin 2. “It can be split into a column base and arm, and being carbon fibre it’s easy enough to hand-carry and build almost anywhere, with a base footprint of 4x4ft. The telescope itself collapses to 1.5m at the front and 1.65m at the back. The whole thing is less than a metre wide, so can go through normal doors, and its telescope speed is faster than a Chapman/Leonard Scorpio 45. It blew my mind – I still don’t think anyone has one in the UK, but I’ll definitely find somewhere to keep it…”

Tim Cragg, DOP (The Deepest Breath, Beckham, Encounters) “Easy! Under my Christmas tree this year, I want the Cooke Anamorphic FF 85mm macro lens. This for me is almost the perfect

perspective, like a 35-40mm spherical lens but with the depth-of-field of an 85mm. Being macro, it doesn’t have the close focusing restrictions that the other anamorphic lenses have.”

A n ideal choice for DOPs who are constantly running out of power mid-shoot, the Hawk-Woods Rampart MXB-R1000 has an impressive 1050Wh capacity. This 26v battery is designed to support high-voltage set-ups – especially lengthy shoot days and remote locations. At just 9.2kg, the Rampart is manoeuvrable despite its powerful output. Dual voltage outputs make it compatible with a variety of gear, and its LCD display lets you easily monitor levels to avoid risking surprise power cuts on-set. With robust rubber and aluminium side panels, it’s built for the demands of production.

Jamie Bailey, cinematographer, director and producer (Deinfluencer, The Mouse Trap) “I suspect I wouldn’t be alone in saying I’d like an ARRI ALEXA

Mini LF under my tree this year. Perhaps a nice little set of ARRI Prime glass to go with it. Don’t mind if I do... and maybe some world peace after that, I don’t want to make Christmas all about my moviemaking needs. Oh, and maybe a second ALEXA for B cam.”
