PRODUCTION THE OLD MAN
T he Old Man Season 2 opens on John Lithgow, his character Harold Harper illuminated by a sliver of sunlight as he awakens in the back of a moving truck. He and Dan Chase, played by a stoic Jeff Bridges, discuss – without explicitly naming her – Chase’s daughter, who disappeared at the end of Season 1. There is a brief moment of suspense when the truck’s engine stops and restarts, followed by an establishing shot of Afghanistan, where Season 2’s story begins. Shot by Jules O’Loughlin, one of the series’ Season 1 DOPs, the Season 2 opener both aligns with and departs from its predecessor. “We wanted to stay true to the show – what we’d shot for the first season,” he explains. Having worked with showrunners Jon Steinberg and Dan Shotz for over a decade, O’Loughlin had no trouble familiarising himself with their process. “We all get on super well, we have an understanding and we're all pretty chilled. We love working together, so that’s why I helped begin Season 1
