Kinefinity’s Vista blows open the cinema camera market with full-frame 6K open gate at a seriously bargain price
inefinity has spent more than a decade producing serious cinema cameras that often deliver specifications
associated with vastly more expensive machinery. But the Vista is different, even by Kinefinity standards. The Chinese company calls it a personal cinema camera, which could easily be dismissed as another marketing category nobody knew they needed. Spend some time with the Vista, though, and the description begins to make sense. This isn’t a mirrorless camera dressed up for filmmaking. There are no stills modes, electronic viewfinder, phase detection AF or IBIS. Instead, Kinefinity has successfully shrunk all the fundamentals of a proper cine cam into a tiny, all-metal box. It measures 101x87x65mm⁄4.0x3.4x2.6in and weighs just 610g⁄1.34lb with its own Kinemount, but no battery. Yet, inside is a 36x24mm⁄1.4x0.9in full-frame CMOS sensor capable of recording 6016x3984 3:2 open gate. At £2399 ⁄ $2499, this makes it a perfect buy for someone who wants to go up to the next level on their filmmaking journey. Built to travel Pick up the Vista and it doesn’t feel like a budget camera. The chassis is machined from aviation-grade aluminium alloy and is solid. The body has plenty of mounting points, while the rear is dominated by an unusual four-inch 6:5 OLED touchscreen. The proportions make sense when shooting 3:2 open gate, because the whole image can be displayed without being squeezed into a conventional widescreen panel. At 700 nits, however, it’s not enormously bright. Indoors it’s crisp and detailed, but strong sunlight makes an external monitor or EVF attractive. The touchscreen is backed by physical controls that include record, playback and menu buttons, a five-way navigation
