Do you need a network switch? A network switch is essentially a box containing multiple Ethernet sockets to connect cameras, computers, controllers and production equipment so that they can communicate. If every camera connects to an Atem or Rodecaster using HDMI, a network switch isn’t required simply to get pictures into the system. But networking becomes increasingly useful as studios grow. A managed Gigabit switch is useful when handling multiple IP video streams, especially if they offer Power over Ethernet, allowing compatible cameras such as PTZ units to receive electricity through the same cable that carries their data and control signals.

Blackmagic cameras can also be controlled through the Atem system, including adjustments to focus, iris and colour. For post-production, DaVinci Resolve provides editing, colour grading and audio tools, making it a natural partner for an Atem- based workflow. Rode approaches the same problem from a different direction. Its Rodecaster Video combines video switching, audio mixing, recording, streaming and graphics into a single compact console. Four HDMI inputs, USB video connections and network video support make it suitable for a variety of production arrangements. A particularly clever feature is automatic switching, which changes camera angles

according to who is speaking. Once the microphones have been assigned to their corresponding cameras, the system can effectively direct a conversation without requiring a dedicated operator. For smaller productions, the Rodecaster Video S offers three HDMI inputs and similar intelligent switching capabilities. The compact Rodecaster Video Core is ideal for creators who are already using a Rodecaster Pro II or Duo audio mixer. Connecting compatible Rode devices via USB can create an integrated audio and video production system. All three support ISO recording, allowing edits to be refined afterwards rather than relying entirely on live decisions.
