MOMENTS THAT SHAPE A CHILDHOOD

At St John’s College School, the journey is just as important as the destination – if not more so

A teacher who notices when a child is ready for a greater challenge. A friend who helps them feel they belong. The excitement of discovering a new passion. The pride of achieving something they once thought impossible. These are moments that shape a childhood. At St John’s College School, we believe childhood should be filled with experiences that help children discover who they are, what inspires them and what they are capable of achieving. The years of childhood pass quickly, but the confidence, curiosity and sense of self they develop can last a lifetime. From their earliest days, children are known and understood as individuals. Strong relationships with teachers create a sense of belonging and security that gives children the confidence to ask questions, take risks and embrace new opportunities. In a city famous for learning, discovery and big ideas, curiosity sits at the heart of school life. Children are encouraged not

But the destination is only part of the story. The most crucial moments are often the smallest: a child who finds the confidence to share an idea, discovers a new passion or realises they can achieve more than they imagined. “An extraordinary childhood is not about what comes next. It’s about who you become along the way.” STEPPING BEYOND From drama to outdoor learning, often it’s experiences outside the classroom that define a child’s school years

simply to absorb knowledge, but to think deeply, make connections and develop ideas of their own. Whether debating a philosophical question, conducting a scientific investigation or bringing creativity to a project, they learn the value of asking ‘why?’ as well as ‘what?’. Discovery extends far beyond the classroom. A child might find confidence on the stage, determination on the sports field, inspiration in the art studio or a sense of adventure among the trees in Forest School. With more than 20 sports clubs offered, alongside music, drama and outdoor learning, children are encouraged to explore widely, and discover where their interests and talents can take them. These experiences help children become confident, resilient, independent learners, laying the foundations for future success. Last year, 100% of our year 8 leavers secured places at their chosen senior schools across 14 different schools, with 39 scholarships.
