“Storing a backup of your data on-set is a crucial part of every professional’s workflow”
G-DRIVEmobile SSD uses hand-picked components to allow it to fend off the toughest conditions in the field, thanks to the SSD being in an insulated custom enclosure housed in a tough aluminium core, which helps prevent overheating. The result is that the G-DRIVEmobile SSD has IP67 water and dust resistance, has drop protection for up to threemetres and a crush resistance of 454kg/1000lb. It’s the go-to choice for real protection. If you really have the need for speed, then the best is the incredible G-DRIVE mobile Pro SSD. Like the G-DRIVEmobile SSD, it has a five-year warranty and comes in 500GB, 1TB and 2TB, from£252.99. Using the newest version of Thunderbolt 3 and a quicker PCIe drive, the G-DRIVE mobile Pro SSD allows for continuous transfer rates of up to 2800MB/s, which delivers incredible, uninterrupted speed. You can edit multistream8K footage at full frame rate and transfer 1TB of data in around sevenminutes or less. It’s the performance tomatch the very latest crop of super high-resolution cinema cameras and allows you to edit the footage in real time. Of course, you don’t want to risk losing all that footage, so the G-DRIVEmobile Pro SSD has the best components, with a shock-resistant enclosure that can withstand a three-metre drop and has a crush resistance of 454kg/1000lb. Fromdrives that offer a sleek design and affordability to the very fastest andmost rugged for themost demanding users, G-Technology has the solution to take the worry out of storing your footage on location. And that leaves you to concentrate onmaking the best films you can.
However, if youwant the additional peace of mindwhen using a drive on location, it makes sense to upgrade to the ArmorATD, available in 1TB, 2TB, 4TB and 5TB sizes from£85.99. It has the same connectivity and same-spec hard drive inside as the G-DRIVEmobile USB-C, but is slightly larger. That’s due to the triple layer of shock resistance to give protection fromdrops and from the elements. The drive ismounted inside a solid aluminiumenclosure and is suspended from internal shockmounts. Around the case is a protective rubber bumper that’s resistant to rain and dust with a crush resistance of 454kg/1000lb. At such a small price premiumover the standard USB-C drive, it makes sense for filmmakers on themove. Both the ArmorATD and G-DRIVEmobile USB-C usemechanical HDDs, but there is another solution that’s significantly faster and offers evenmore protection. That’s to use an SSD, which has nomoving parts and thismakes it less vulnerable to impacts or vibration. There is a significant boost in speed that means ingesting footage is far quicker. And you can also edit footage direct from the drive and play it back in high resolutionwithout any hiccups. As long as your computer is fast and powerful enough to keep up, a G-Technology SSDwill be a revelation for editing on the go. Available in 500GB, 1TB and 2TB versions from just £128.99, the G-DRIVEmobile SSD has the faster USB 3.1 Gen 2 connection, compatible with USB-C, USB-3.0 and Thunderbolt 3 computers. Andwith a transfer rate of up to 560MB/s, it offers a speed of performance that is somuch faster than even the quickest HDDs.
G-TECHNOLOGY DRIVES PASS THE REAL-WORLD TEST Theoretical data rates make good reading on spec sheets, but it’s in real-world use that drive speed is important. Mega retailer CVP took four G-Technology hard drives out of stock and put them through its own tests to see how they fared. The first test was to use a 2019 Apple Macbook Pro to check if real data transfer speed was as claimed, and all the drives were well within tolerance. Test number two was to transfer 156GB of Cinema Raw Light files shot in a Canon EOS C200 to different G-Technology hard drives. The results are: • G-DRIVE mobile USB-C: 20 mins 5 secs • ArmorATD: 19 mins 50 secs • G-DRIVE mobile SSD: 5 mins 6 secs • G-DRIVE mobile Pro SSD: 1 min 43 secs The third test was to work on a completed Adobe Premiere Pro project file on an i9Windows 10 Pro 64-bit PC computer to edit files directly from each of the hard drives. The files were a mix of Canon EOS C200 4K Cinema Raw Light files and Red Gemini 5K HD files with 9:1 compression, lightly graded in Adobe Premiere Pro. The G-DRIVE Mobile Pro SSDwas perfect, with no frames dropped and you could scrub through footage with no restrictions. The G-DRIVE mobile SSD was almost as good, apart fromyou had to slow down some scrubbing at certain times. As expected, both the G-DRIVE mobile USB-C and ArmorATD struggled with continuous playback on such huge files. But these more affordable drives are ideal for data storage, and for editing lower-resolution files.
