To turn the Panasonic LUMIX S1H into a fully production-ready camera, but in a small and portable package, JimMarks has built up a compact kit that allows him to shoot quickly and control everything he needs effectively. “I use a SmallRig Cage that’s cheap but has a wonderful top mount that covers the Panasonic XLR microphone adapter and protects it,” he says. “It’s very rigid and means I can mount a Tentacle Sync E time code unit on the top. “The follow focus is a compact model from Tilta and there’s a V-Lock battery plate on the left of the rig.” The FX Lion Nano One V-Lock battery powers the camera via a USB-C output and the Atomos Ninja V via a D-Tap cable – although the monitor can run from a standard Sony NP-F fit battery. Jim likes to use a short Sennheiser XLR shotgun mic and a Panasonic eye cup for when he wants to use the viewfinder. The front of the lens has an SLR Magic Variable ND filter and a Tiffen Black Pro-Mist ¼ filter. “If I want the shot a bit moody, flarey and hazy, I use the Tiffen filter,” JIM’S PRODUCTION- READY KIT

ABOVE Jim’s kit includes a Smallrig cage, a Sennheiser XLR shotgun mic and an Atomos Ninja V

“I use them in the larger Atomos Shogun Inferno which is what I use with a larger cinema camera and also an Atomos Sumo in the studio which acts as a great client monitor that records the feed as well. All the Atomos products work so well together, are well built and help me make films with no compromises on quality.”

he says. “It flattens the footage and takes off some contrast.” Jim records to a 500GB AtomX SSDmini SSD which is the new smaller size that fits perfectly inside the Ninja V. “Although I do sometimes use standard-sized SSDs in the Atomos Ninja V as I already have them,” he says.
