COLOUR: BOLD AND DARK
T he kitchen is one of the most important rooms in the house. It’s gone from being a utilitarian space to an all-purpose room, where we gather, find nourishment and socialise. Homeowners have since become more adventurous when it comes to picking the key colours in their kitchens, moving from safe neutrals to bold shades, like navy, forest green and even black. Patrick O’Donnell, international brand ambassador at Farrow & Ball, agrees: “Dark kitchen cabinetry is everywhere right now,” he says, “especially in rich jewel tones of blue and green, such as Studio Green and Oval Room Blue. Introducing pockets of brighter jewel tones like India Yellow on a windowsill, or a pop of bold colour on the insides of cupboards, can add interest and joy to a kitchen.” At Cambridge-based Henry Rose Interiors, in-house experts can design bespoke kitchens in a range of on-trend colours. The company works with leading German and British brands who are committed to sustainability and offer a wide choice of styles. Paint and colour expert Annie Sloan warns about choosing any shades that are too ‘of the moment’. “Your kitchen should be a colour you love rather than a colour that’s in fashion,” she says. “Once you’ve chosen your main colour, assess whether it’s warm- or cool-toned. Then pick a complementary colour in the opposite tone and add accents. This will emphasise your main shade while bringing a little va-va- voom to the heart of your home!”
