SAFFRON WALDEN
SAFFRON GRANGE
A family-run vineyard on the outskirts of Saffron Walden, Saffron Grange has won acclaim far and wide for its superb sparkling wines. Making the most of the region’s unique climate and topography – which happens to be perfectly suited to growing exceptional grapes – the team have picked up multiple awards for their offerings, including two silver medals at last year’s prestigious Decanter World Wine Awards. As we look forward to the new season, Saffron Grange has released the Cuvée Rosé, an ideal fizz for toasting the start of summer. With a divine coral-pink colour, it’s made from 100% pinot noir grapes and aged for 18 months on its yeast lees. The nose is bursting with aromas of wild raspberries and fragrant rose petals, and the palate is rich with ripe alpine strawberries and cream, balanced with a refreshing, sherbet- like acidity. A wine from the spectacular 2020 vintage, you can taste the effects of that summer’s late burst of September sunshine – helping the grapes ripen to perfection! The result is undoubtedly a wine to remember. To learn more about the unique story behind Saffron Grange, we recommend trying a tour and tasting (available until the end of September), which includes samples of the wines, plus a chance to explore the land and find out what makes it so special.
The Piano, an atmospheric cafe that’s housed in the building once belonging to Queen Victoria’s piano tuner, is a brilliant spot for a drink and a bite to eat. The team are continuing this musical heritage with regular jazz nights, and the tasty brunches, lunches and dinners – plus great wine and coffee – make it a surefire winner. While we in Cambridge have foodPark, Saffron Walden’s street food hub is Off The Beaten Truck, which hosts regular pop-ups at The Common and The Railway Arms. Featuring Steak & Honour, Pizza Mondo, Buffalo Joe’s, Guerrilla Kitchen and Azahar, the events are a chance to sample some of the most exciting food trucks on the local scene. The team are looking forward to their summer party on 30 June, which will give guests a huge line-up of trucks, plus bars, a DJ and a host of activities to enjoy. Also, keep an eye out for monthly supper clubs held at Tipi Coffee, which will host a different chef each month.
